Cinco de Mayo

Cinco de Mayo is the Mexican celebration of a victory over France, according to Wikipedia. Whatever it is, Denver goes crazy and celebrates it like the Fourth of July every year. Civic Center Park, in front of the capitol building, fills up with thousands of Mexicans strolling around and selling stands full of...stuff. The white people also set up stands for various companies and banks, and inevitably the native Americans come out as well and bang drums and wear ceremonial headdresses, for no apparent reason. There is always tons of food, usually thick turkey legs and roasted corn on the cob and little tubs of Pico de Gallo. I usually go and walk around, smiling at all the pregnant Mexican women and cringing at the music. I can't make it this year because I have too much to accomplish on a Monday. Every day I take the bus by the capitol, but I didn't see the festivities getting ready early this morning, so I'm not sure what is going on. But its a beautiful, summer day, full of the smell of cherry blossoms and lilac (one of my favorite plants, and favorite smells!!) and maybe I'll celebrate the Mexicans celebrating their independence by eating a burrito for dinner (I will be having my dinner in the library, where I will be finishing this ridiculous outline I have to turn in tomorrow evening). Viva Mexico! Love, Misa
